Our Mission - Our goal is to give sanctuary to deer who are in danger of euthanasia. While our main focus is deer we do give sanctuary and to help facilitate the rescue of animals.
We are a private Nonprofit 501c3
shelter not open to the public.
EIN 83-4112455
We are a permitted 501c3 nonprofit shelter for deer and other animals through the state of CA, located in Aguanga, CA. we work very closely with Fish and Wildlife in helping non native deer species get placed in permitted facilities including our own. We do not breed, buy or sell rescued deer. All rescued animals will be castrated if able to safely do so.
Most people are aware of animal shelters for cats and dogs, but there is a need for shelters to care for many different types of animals. Deer in particular are in a dire need of shelter and sanctuary. Deer are illegal to own here in California but sadly that does not stop some from trafficking them into the state and into the illegal pet trade. Although these animals are beautiful and fascinating creatures, they take specialized care and pose a danger to the wild deer population. Without the proper care these majestic animals will fall ill and spread disease to wildlife. For this reason, California Fish and Wildlife confiscates deer who are illegally kept. Shelters give them a second chance at life and a place to call home. The alternative is euthanasia. In all of California there are only 2 shelters we know of who are permitted. We believe we are the only shelter at this time who has room for new intakes!
California regulations - In California, it is generally illegal to own deer as pets. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) restricts the importation, transportation, and possession of live restricted animals, including deer, unless under specific permit conditions. Fallow deer farming is allowed under strict regulations, but requires permits and adherence to specific disease testing and facility requirements.
Our journey with helping to save these animals started at a place called Windswept Ranch in Rosamond California. We volunteered to help care for the deer held at that shelter for several years and found that we had a passion for these curious creatures and also learned about the dire situation they can be in if there is nowhere left to go. After hearing of the news that the owner of the shelter would be retiring and closing their doors, we knew we had to act. Thus started our work towards opening a new shelter in Southern California to fill the gap that would be felt with the loss of one of the few shelters left. After several semi-truck loads of material, countless days in the summer heat building enclosures, financial burden, and a hefty amount of paperwork with California Fish and Wildlife we finally opened our doors to Deer in need of sanctuary.
Our goals for the near future are to continue developing the sanctuaries 40 acres for the animals. We are working hard on not only on fencing, shelters but also clearing some of the land to create a barrier for fire hazard. Our area is a high fire risk which we have taken many preventative measures. One day we hope to purchase a used tractor to help with that and the animals needs.
